hip tranquil chick podcast #110: exploring musicology

Welcome to the 110th edition of the Hip Tranquil Chick podcast: a guide to life on and off the yoga mat.

Today’s menu features a must-have pose in On the Mat, exploring musicology with Michelle Payne in Off the Mat, and we’ve got Omwork and Savvy Sources for you too. View our shownotes at hiptranquilchick.com/blog.

On the Mat: neck rolls

Off the Mat: Michelle Payne has been in love with music since her toddler years. As a young girl, she decided she wanted to be a performer after seeing an episode of "Fame". Watching all of those actors dancing and singing around the fountain looked like the best place to be in the world. As a teenager, she found herself in a high school just like the one on Fame. At 14, Michelle was accepted into the Vocal Music program at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in Jacksonville, Florida. In addition to studying music at least 4 hours a day, she competed in vocal contests, performed in musicals, and taught herself how to play the guitar. After high school, she was awarded music scholarships from several colleges as well as the Micheal Jackson Music Education foundation. She studied music at the college level for 2 years, but decided to take a break and study new subjects. She continued her education, but went on to earn a degree from the University of North Florida in Sociology and Religious Studies. Changing academic tracks did not change her musical aspirations. In addition to leading her own Rock band, she also began teaching private music students in guitar, piano, and voice. This is when she realized how much fun it is to teach. That was about 6 years ago, and now Michelle teaches 30 private students as well as 55 high school students at YULA high school. She has even added drumming and percussion to her curriculum. Michelle's laid back style is what draws so many students to her studio. She believes in inspiring kids to play music, not forcing it on them. "I had a lot of mean teachers. I learned a lot from them, but I wish they had been a little nicer and more supportive," says Payne. These experiences are what shaped her views on what music education should be. "I believe in making sure each student is having fun. If they enjoy classical music, then that's what we'll play. If they hate classical, then we'll find something more suitable for his or her tastes."
