Drink your tea slowly and reverently, as if it is the axis on which the world revolves - slowly, evenly, without rushing toward the future. Live the actual moment. Only this moment is life.

just back from michael moore's latest movie, sicko, and it is very thought provoking. i've been on a kick lately where i only want to watch documentaries. guess it has something to do with my passion for only reading non-fiction.
finally, i hit cnn.com tonight for my regular worldly updates and was sooooo sad to see the article on dog fighting! one night at the emergency vet (bonnard had probably eaten something odd . . . can't recall why we were there), the animal channel had a piece on this and i can't get the horror out of my head. i don't encourage watching the videos as they are heart-wrenching, but i promise to look into activist work that can be done to help change this and hope you'll join me on the journey. here is a fact sheet about it from the humane society that outlines some small steps we can take.

The Humane Society and Last Chance for Animals (at least those two) are urging people to contact the NFL asking for Michael Vick's suspension. There is info on their websites. Also - 52 dogs were seized in that case by the Humane Society - all of which need care right now if people are interested in small donations. I am on their mailing lists - don't work for them :)
I LOVE documentaries and there are so many awesome ones out there (I'm an avid tv watcher and filmgoer and I get so frustrated and saddened when I here people talk about how there's "nothing good on tv"... oh, that is so wrong! First of all, tv is a medium which is so flexible and open that ANYTHING can be on tv, news, art, documentaries, instruction, inspiration... My tv is FULL of dozens of great programs and hundreds of amazing, riveting documentaries-- some of my fave documentaries are:
"When the Levees Broke"
"No Dumb Questions"
"In Pot We Trust"
"Shame"
"Little Man"
"Southern Comfort"
"Pack, Strap, Swallow"
"Ghosts of Abu Ghraib"
"Born Rich"
"Capturing the Friedmans"
"Heir to an Execution"
One other thing, I beg of you: please get your news from a better source than cnn. Read newspapers with good reputations (like the Washington Post, New York Times) and if you must watch television news- watch PBS news. Everything else is so grossly unjournalistic and commercial. You won't find the truth on cable news.
I just wanted to tell you how much I love your podcast!! I'm just now getting into it and listening to all the past shows and am having such a wonderful time with them.. you're a total inspiration...
btw, we are so similar as far as our love for non fiction.. I can't get enough books and everytime I'm in a book store I want to come home with at least 5 to 10 new books to read. Can you make a career out of just reading books? ;)

Re: Non-Fiction... There's so many interesting things in real life. I'm with you on the Non-Fiction - why spend time imagining when you can spend time exploring???
To the others that left comments - Thanks for the suggestions of documentaries!
Another one to check out is "Born into Brothels"
A great non-fiction book is "Three Cups of Tea"
