pondering philosophical (+ fancy) tattoo

in may 1995 after graduation from university, i road tripped to chicago with a girlfriend to visit a dear friend from childhood. we were about to jaunt off to europe for 3 months of backpacking and i had my heart set on getting a mary engelbreit sunflower tattoo on my belly. and that i did.

i've pondered another over the years, but never felt the perfect fit. until now. i'm thinking lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu in fancy, feminine cursive inside my upper arm. translation: may all beings everywhere be happy and free. may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all.

while googling for images of tattoos in this location, i found the awesome image above of lady gaga getting a rilke quote tattoo that i had to share. such a tranquil image of an oh-so-intense experience.

as you may know, i'm obsessed with the mantra mentioned above - particularly the notion of thoughts, words, and actions contributing to the happiness and freedom of all (especially piggies).

contemplating making the appointment. promise to document the journey when i do.

any favorite tattoos? words of wisdom on the experience?

The inside of your upper arm?! Seriously sensitive I would think!
I have a skunk of my hip sitting in a bunch of flowers (like the one from Bambi) that I put there to remind me that even though people stink sometimes, remember their pretty parts too!! I should have probably gotten it on my wrist so I would be reminded of it more often...:)

I have my oldest son's name on my left shoulder blade with a red heart under it. I have always wanted more tat's and would really like the "om" symbol on my wrist or ankle...but my body doesn't take well to the ink, so I never got any others after the first one!

Kimberly, the one you want sounds so pretty, and I love the meaning behind it. Can't wait to follow you on this journey. :)

that is a great pic of Lady G, i love it, and yes that is THE most painful place on your whole body. Here in Thailand they use the traditional method of bamboo tatooing, it's a really gentle and ancient way of making a tattoo and an artform passed down by word of mouth from the original Sanskrit masters many, many moons ago. I have one of the dancing spirits from angkhor wat on my back done with a gun, and one with bamboo on my inner arm. Both are beautiful, but while the gun was somewhat stressful, the bamboo was a totally relaxing and natural experience. Hope you find the perfect one for you, :)

Hi Kimberly!
I have three tattoos: an astrological symbol on my inner wrist for my sign Cancer, two snakes intertwined in a Celtic knot on my back and a mandala with a lotus and om symbol on my inside ankle. The one on my ankle took about 90 minutes and hurt in certain spots. The one on my back took four hours and wasn't bad at all until the end when he was going over several spots again and again. The one on my wrist took 10 minutes and every single one of those ten minutes I prayed for death. I'm not sure about the inner arm, but just be careful and do it in stages if it's bad. I might get just one more tattoo of a karma wheel, but it will go maybe on my bicep.:)

wow, thanks for all your input + insights. yikes on it being a super-sensitive spot. looks like yogic breathing will come in handy here! x

I have nine:)
That sounds utterly beautiful and I think you should go for it.

If you are looking for a local artist, Madame Cyn at Britishink in DC does incredible work and is a joy to work with. She did my left forearm piece and I couldn't be happier.

A friend confirms that the inner, upper arm is a very sensitive spot. Be calm, be focused, and breath your way through.

Beautiful idea, yes that's a tricky spot, I have a sleeve of a phoenix that's not quite finished, BTW love all the podcast's, book's, blog's. You are an inspiration and a mentor! Can't wait to see the finished piece!--Patty
