There is an awesome Mac app for mindmapping. It's called SimpleMind, and there is a free version, or you can pay like $5 for a the full version and have it synch between your computer and whatever mobile device. I've used it to outline four books and I love it. You can make a stream-of-consciousness mind map, and then move the bubbles around to make something close to a linear outline. Also, it synchs with Scrivener, so you can import your outline directly into your project as sections or folders or whatever. It's pretty awesome.

(I don't work for them or anything, I just love this program very very much because I also have a problem with linear outlining.)
